An electronic cigarette containing a battery must travel in the cabin, not in the hold. The 2026 IATA rules also specify that it must be protected against damage and accidental activation, and that charging the device or its batteries on board the aircraft is prohibited.
Electronic cigarette: cabin or hold?
According to IATA recommendations, electronic cigarettes, e-cigars, e-pipes, and other personal vaporizers containing batteries must be placed only in carry-on baggage.
Therefore, do not put your electronic cigarette in checked baggage.
Can you take 18650 or 21700 batteries?
Spare lithium batteries must also travel in the cabin and be individually protected against short circuits. An insulating case is essential for removable batteries.
To better understand these formats, see our 18650 vs 21700 comparison as well as the Batteries collection.
Can you recharge your vape on the plane?
No. IATA states that charging electronic cigarettes and/or their batteries on board is not permitted.
How can you prevent accidental activation?
- turn off the device if the model has a power-off function;
- lock the Fire button when this function is available;
- store the equipment so that no object can press the controls;
- protect spare batteries individually.
What about e-liquids in the cabin?
E-liquids are considered liquids under airport security rules. Capacity limits and transport requirements may depend on the airport, country, and airline. Check the rules for your journey before departure.
Should you empty your tank before the flight?
The drop in pressure at altitude may increase the risk of leaks from certain tanks. To limit the risk, transport the equipment upright whenever possible and protect it in a suitable bag. Some travelers prefer to travel with a tank that is only partly filled or empty.
Can you vape on the plane?
No. Being allowed to carry an electronic cigarette in the cabin does not mean that you can use it on board. Follow the instructions of the airline and crew.
Beware of airline- and country-specific rules
IATA rules provide an important safety framework, but an airline or destination country may impose additional restrictions. Some states strictly regulate or even ban certain vaping products. Check local regulations before traveling.
