Getting small drops of e-liquid in your mouth is not how an electronic cigarette normally works. This phenomenon, often called spitting or “spitback,” is most often caused by excess liquid in the coil, condensation in the mouthpiece, or an improper balance between liquid intake and heating power.

What should you do immediately?

Stop vaping for a few moments, remove the mouthpiece or pod if the device allows it, and wipe away any visible condensation with a clean paper towel. Then check that the tank is not overfilled, that the pod is correctly installed, and that the power matches the coil.

Why does e-liquid rise into your mouth?

1. Condensation in the drip tip or chimney

Some of the vapor naturally cools before leaving the mouthpiece. It can condense into droplets. If these accumulate, they may eventually be drawn into your mouth. Regularly cleaning the mouthpiece and chimney helps reduce this phenomenon.

2. Flooded coil

A “flooded” coil contains more e-liquid than it can vaporize. You will often hear a gurgling sound, and spitting may occur. Possible causes include overfilling, excessive priming, insufficient power, or storing the device for a long period with a full tank.

3. Incorrect power setting

If the power is too low, liquid may accumulate. If it is too high, you may instead dry out the cotton and create a burnt taste. On an adjustable mod, stay within the range indicated on the coil and adjust gradually.

4. E-liquid that is too thin for the device

Very thin e-liquid can reach a coil quickly when it is designed for a more powerful vape. Conversely, very thick liquid may feed some small coils too slowly. The correct PG/VG ratio should therefore be chosen according to the coil and draw. For balanced liquids, see our guide 50/50 coil and e-liquid.

5. Overfilling or liquid in the chimney

When filling, avoid pouring liquid into the central tube or above the indicated level. Follow the filling method specified by the manufacturer, as it varies between pods and clearomizers.

6. Worn coil or seals

A worn coil may not retain liquid as effectively. Damaged seals or a damaged pod can also create air leaks and encourage leaking. If you notice liquid around the tank, also refer to our guide why your electronic cigarette is leaking.

How can you stop e-liquid spitback?

  • Regularly clean the mouthpiece and remove condensation.
  • Do not exceed the recommended fill level.
  • Check that the coil or pod is installed correctly.
  • Use the recommended power range.
  • Adjust the PG/VG ratio to the type of coil.
  • Replace worn parts if the spitting continues.

For users of the XROS range, the Vaporesso XROS Series Pods 2 ml / 3 ml – Pack of 4 allow you to replace the entire pod/coil assembly when it is worn. The Vaporesso XROS 6 Mini Kit – 30W 1600mAh 3 ml is an example of a compact pod using this type of pod system. Another example of a modern pod is the VOOPOO Argus G4 35W 1650mAh Kit.

You can browse the VAPEVO pod cartridges if your pod needs to be replaced.

What is best avoided

Do not try to compensate for gurgling by sharply increasing the power beyond the intended range. Also avoid blowing into or shaking the device aggressively: depending on its design, this may move more liquid into the channels. The safest approach is to follow the manufacturer’s instructions, clean accessible areas, and replace the part if it is defective.

FAQ: e-liquid in your mouth

Why does this happen especially after filling?

Filling can introduce a small amount of liquid into the chimney or temporarily flood the coil. Check the level and clean the mouthpiece before vaping again.

Can a new coil spit liquid?

Yes, particularly if it was over-saturated during priming. However, the phenomenon should disappear once the system has stabilized.

Does liquid in your mouth necessarily mean there is a leak?

No. Condensation alone can create droplets without any external leak. However, repeated spitting together with liquid under the tank is more likely to indicate a flooded coil or a sealing problem.

Nicotine-containing e-liquids contain an addictive substance. Vaping is not risk-free, and products should be kept out of reach of children.
