Top Fill is generally the most convenient when it allows you to fill the cartridge without removing it from the pod. Side Fill is still simple, compact, and very widespread. Neither system is inherently âleak-proofâ: the cartridge design and proper use matter more.
What is Top Fill?
With a Top Fill system, the filling port is located on the top or upper part of the cartridge. Depending on the model, you simply remove a cap, open a plug, or lift a membrane to access the reservoir.
Its main advantages
- quick access;
- less need to remove the cartridge;
- convenient filling on the go;
- reduced risk of getting liquid on the contacts when the port is properly positioned.
What is Side Fill?
Side Fill places the filling port on the side of the cartridge, usually behind a silicone tab. On many pods, you need to remove the cartridge from the battery to access the plug.
Its advantages
- simple, proven design;
- often very compact cartridge;
- easy-to-identify side plug;
- wide choice of models on the market.
Which one is cleaner?
Top Fill has a practical advantage when the cartridge can remain on the device. However, a port that is too small, an improperly positioned bottle, or overfilling can still cause leaks.
Top Fill = fewer leaks?
Not automatically. A leak can be caused by the seals, a worn coil, a liquid that is too thin, an overfilled reservoir, or pressure changes. The position of the port is only one factor among many.
If your device is leaking, see our guide to the causes of e-cigarette leaks.
Examples of current pods
Manufacturers are gradually moving toward more accessible filling systems. The Vaporesso VIBE SE 2, for example, uses Top Fill, while other ranges retain side access.

Which system should you choose?
If you fill your pod several times a day or want to minimize handling, Top Fill is particularly convenient. If you already use a reliable, easy-to-open Side Fill model, there is no reason to switch solely because of the position of the port.
FAQ
Should you fill a cartridge all the way to the top?
Follow the level and instructions provided by the manufacturer. Avoid forcing liquid into the central chimney or overfilling the cartridge.
How long should you wait after the first fill?
A new cartridge needs time for its coil to absorb the liquid before use. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and see our priming guide.
Can the silicone plug on a Side Fill wear out?
Yes, over time and with repeated handling. If the plug is loose, torn, or no longer closes properly, replace the cartridge.
