Coughing while vaping is common, especially during the first few days. However, a persistent cough may also indicate an unsuitable setting or e-liquid.

1. A nicotine level that is too high

A concentration that is too strong for your device can make inhalation harsh. The required level depends on your dependence profile and vaping style. See our guide to choosing a nicotine level.

2. A level that is too low, causing you to take stronger puffs

Conversely, an insufficient level may lead you to take more puffs or inhale more deeply.

3. Too much propylene glycol

PG intensifies the throat hit. An e-liquid with a very high PG content may feel irritating to some users. Our guide to 50/50, 70/30 and 30/70 explains the ratios.

4. Power that is too high

Excessive power heats the e-liquid more and may make the vapor too hot. Follow the range indicated by the coil manufacturer.

5. An unsuitable draw

Former smokers are often more comfortable with an MTL inhale, which is closer to the action of smoking a cigarette. See MTL, RDL or DL.

6. A new coil that was not primed properly

A wick that has not been sufficiently saturated may cause an initial dry hit. See how to prime a coil.

7. A worn coil

A coil at the end of its life may affect the vapor. A burnt taste or a noticeable loss of flavor are common signs.

8. Puffs that are too long or too close together

Wait a few seconds between puffs so that the coil can resaturate properly.

When should you seek medical advice?

A severe, persistent cough accompanied by shortness of breath, chest pain or other unusual symptoms warrants medical advice. A troubleshooting article cannot determine the medical cause.

FAQ

Is it normal to cough when you are just starting?

This can happen while you adjust your draw and device, but lasting discomfort should not be ignored.

Do nicotine salts cause less coughing?

The throat sensation may be different, but this depends on the level, device and user. See nicotine salts vs classic nicotine.
