The PG/VG ratio directly affects the e-liquid’s fluidity, the amount of vapor, and the type of device it is suitable for. A 50/50 ratio is generally versatile; a PG-rich liquid is more fluid; a VG-rich liquid is thicker and often requires a more generous liquid supply.

PG and VG: what are they used for?

Propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG) make up most of an e-liquid’s base. PG is more fluid and contributes to a stronger throat hit. VG is more viscous and promotes denser vapor.

50/50, 70/30, or 30/70: comparison table

PG/VG ratio Fluidity Vapor Typical device
70/30 Very fluid Moderate Pods and small coils suitable for fluid liquids
50/50 Intermediate Balanced A wide range of pods and MTL/RDL kits
30/70 Thick More abundant RDL/DL devices with sufficient liquid inlets

These guidelines are general: always follow the recommendations of the cartridge or coil manufacturer.

Why is 50/50 so common?

50/50 offers a practical compromise between fluidity and vapor production. It works with many modern pods and many coils designed for MTL or moderate RDL vaping.

To learn more, see our guide to coils for 50/50 e-liquid and our guide to choosing an e-liquid for a pod.

Is a VG-rich e-liquid always better?

No. More VG does not automatically mean a better vaping experience. A very viscous liquid may not be supplied properly by a small cartridge or a coil designed for more fluid liquids. This can encourage dry hits, flavor loss, or premature wear.

What about a PG-rich liquid?

A PG-rich ratio may suit some low-power devices, but its high fluidity can also encourage leaking in systems designed for thicker liquids. The right choice therefore always depends on the device.

Which ratio for MTL, RDL, or DL?

  • MTL: 50/50 is very common; ratios richer in PG may also be suitable depending on the cartridge.
  • RDL: 50/50 or a liquid slightly richer in VG, depending on the coil.
  • DL: VG-rich liquids are often better suited to powerful coils with large liquid inlets.

Does the PG/VG ratio affect which nicotine strength to choose?

The choice of nicotine strength primarily depends on the vaper’s needs and the type of vaping. Higher power generally delivers more aerosol per puff than a small MTL pod. See our guide to nicotine strength.

FAQ

Can you use 30/70 in a pod?

Only if the cartridge and its coil can handle high viscosity. Check the manufacturer’s recommendation.

Does 70/30 PG/VG produce less vapor?

With comparable equipment, a higher proportion of PG generally produces less dense vapor than a VG-rich blend.

Which ratio should you choose if you are unsure?

50/50 is a versatile starting point for many pods, provided it is compatible with the coil being used.
